Spring nears...

Our Chinese Witch Hazel enjoying this weekend's late winter sunshine:

I look forward to the flowering of this plant every year, as it's blooms mark the turning point of winter for me and I marks a time where I can start to count down the days to warmer weather.

Mrs MG holds a similar liking to the Chinese Witch Hazel, gifted by her mum as a birthday gift a good few moons ago now. So much so that she called me out into the garden last night to show me the results of her evening's handiwork - rigging up solar lighting to illuminate :)

Cacti Babies Update

I know that its just a couple of weeks since I last posted un update on my Trich. cacti babies, but they have really seemed to swell since I last photographed them :)

Catnip Guard

 Well, someone seems a bit annoyed we have protected the catnip in the garden. I think I will move the guard a little to let the pwscat chew on the tops on a small section of the plant. I don't want to be too mean. Here he is during happier times.

Tier Two Crassula #6

I potted up this old half-neglected Crassula ovata undulata this afternoon. My aim? To help shape a pretty dramatic lower trunk on the the plant...

Waiting for the spring

My 'Glastonbury' and 'Skinny Fingers' Crassula ovata plants sat on our kitchen windowsill, waiting patiently for the Spring:

Variegated Bear's Paw Plant

This little plant, a variegated Cotyledon tomentosa (Bear's Paw Plant) has been slow to develop over the last year. Last see on MG here, the plant seems to have favoured growing a plethora of small soft furry leaves instead of putting on any appreciable size. 

Trying to remedy this, I have now re-potted the plant in fresh compost. During the procedure, I discovered the root structure was very poor, so I am hoping the different growing medium will have a positive effect on the Cotyledon. I have also changed the location of the Bear's Paw in the house, so it gets more indirect sunlight and am keeping my fingers crossed that, as Spring rapidly approaches, I have given my rather cute Bear's Paw a better opportunity to thrive. Finger's crossed.

Calea zacatechichi

Calea zacatechichi - a.k.a. the bitter dream herb. I find growing these easier in a bottle garden, or in this case, a glass head.

Last seen here, my little cacti seems to have survived their winter sleep. Wanting to give them a bit of a head start in putting on a bit of girth, I moved the cacti onto a heat tray beneath some artificial lights. It's time for the baby San Pedro and Bolivian Torch cacti to wake up!

After sharing some images of my 'top tier' Crassula's - the Amber, Sorrento, Glastonbury and Skinny Fingers plants, I thought I would share one of my tier two (plants in progress) Jades today.

 This is actually a large cutting from my eldest Jade, which I am growing on its side to hopefully create an interesting design in the plant as it grows. Watch this space, as they say...
